DLC developments on World Tribology Congress in Japan

world_tribology_congressThe 4th World Tribology Congress (WTC IV), held at the Kyoto International Conference Center in Kyoto from 6-11 September 2009, was organized by the Japanese Society of Tribologists. They formulated their goal as follows: "As science and technology are required to contribute towards achieving sustainable developments on planet Earth, it has great meaning to bring together top tribology researchers and engineers from around the world at the venue at which the important international meeting of the Climate Summit was held in 1997."

Hauzer is proud to have given a presentation about developments on Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coatings and to contribute towards a greater knowledge about PVD and PACVD coatings to reduce friction and thus lower CO2 emissions.

The presentation given by Roel Tietema, Manager Process Engineering, was well attended and generated useful discussions. Due to the opening of Hauzer's Japanese Branch in the beginning of this year, all Japanese attendants could discuss their issues in their own language.

A few conclusions:

  • The reduction of CO2 emission will give an impulse to the development of low friction coatings
  • The combination of lubrication oil and coating is an important factor in the performance of the system
  • Carbon coating will keep on playing an important role in automotive applications
  • A newly developed ta-C coating promises good potential for automotive applciations by combining good adhesion and high hardness
  • It may be expected that new technologies, such as HIPIMS+ will be applied for carbon coatings
